The Stonewall DFL Endorses Andrew Johnson for City Council Ward 12

“A passionate advocate for equality for all Minneapolis residents”

September 4, 2013 Minneapolis, Minn - The Stonewall DFL on Tuesday formally announced its endorsement of Andrew Johnson for City Council Ward 12. Johnson, a passionate advocate for equality for all Minneapolis residents, received unanimous support from the Stonewall DFL. The Stonewall DFL is the LGBT Caucus of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party and includes more than 4,000 members statewide. This important endorsement adds to Johnson’s growing and diverse community support, which includes both the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union, all announced DFL constituency caucuses, and many elected officials.

Gerald Strauss, Political Director of the Stonewall DFL, said, “We stand behind Andrew Johnson as the best choice for Ward 12. Andrew’s intimate knowledge and research into the City’s ordinances has proven to be valuable in our fight for equality. We look forward to working with Andrew to update these to ensure fair and equal treatment of all residents. In endorsing Andrew Johnson, we are endorsing an advocate of fair and common sense regulation, a champion for equality and a friend to all residents, including those in the LGBT community. Of all the candidates currently running for Ward 12, Andrew Johnson was the only one who sought the DFL endorsement and had a very strong showing at the Ward 12 Caucus. He is also the candidate in this race that most embodies Stonewall DFL’s values and mission. We’re proud to support him for City Council.”

Andrew Johnson said, “I am honored and excited to receive the endorsement of the Stonewall DFL, which has been fighting to advance equality and equity in our city and state for decades. While this has been a banner year towards advancing the rights of LGBT individuals, there is still much work to be done. I continue to be committed to working for equality for all Minneapolis residents, and together we can make this city a better place for everyone to live.”

Andrew Johnson is currently the President of the Longfellow Community Council (LCC), the largest neighborhood organization in Minneapolis. He also owns a small business, and through it, performs IT services for an educational non-profit.
